Selesai membaca Numbered Account setelah hampir tiga bulan

Tanggal 28 Februari 2010, sekitar jam 2.20 pagi, saya selesai membaca fiksyen bertajuk Numbered Account oleh Christopher Reich. Ia buku keempat penulis thriller ini yang saya baca. Buku ini selesai dibaca setelah hampir tiga bulan! Tentu saudara bertanya, mengapa lama sangat?

Di sini penjelasan saya. Pembacaan Numbered Account terhenti beberapa kali justeru kerana saya mulakan pembacaan buku lain. Bila buku lain dibaca ketika fiksyen ini masih belum selesai, pastinya saya akan tinggalkan sementara waktu. Buku baru dibaca tadi pula saya berhenti membacanya, dan mengambil buku baru seterusnya. Jadi Numbered Account terus terbelakang, cuma saya tidak tinggalkan terus.

Numbered Account bermula secara perlahan. (Itu mungkin antara sebab saya terhenti-henti membacanya, lantas menyambar buku lain.) Buku setebal 753 halaman ini menjadi semakin menarik dari bab ke bab. Pada suku terakhir, saya sukar untuk melepaskannya. Aksi dan plot menjadi semakin padat dan mendebarkan.

Itu mungkin antara kelebihan fiksyen thriller yang ditulis oleh penulis yang baik seumpama Christopher Reich ini. Jika boleh dibandingkan dengan novel thriller penulis-penulis tempatan dalam bahasa Melayu, maka saya nampak jelas perbezaannya. Sebahagian besar novel thriller bahasa Melayu menjadi semakin hambar dan mendatar di hujung cerita. Ini juga benar bagi beberapa hasil karya penulis kegemaran saya, saudara Ramlee Awang Murshid.

Ya, mungkin juga minda saya sudah terbiasa dengan hasil novel thriller bahasa Inggeris penulis Barat. Justeru itu, mungkin benak saya agak sukar menerima plot penceritaan thriller penulis Melayu kita. Atau penulis Melayu harus belajar gaya penceritaan dari mereka? Walaupun begitu, saya akan terus menyokong novel-novel thriller berbahasa Melayu.

Sifat tamak kepada buku dan ilmu, tidak kepada yang lain

Antara sifat tamak saya ialah membeli dan membaca buku. Sikap ini mungkin saya tidak begitu bijak membendungnya, sejak dulu. Pantang saya ialah melihat kelibat kedai buku, pameran / pesta buku dan jualan murah buku. Perkara lain saya boleh elak, yang satu ini amat payah.

Kebiasaan saya ini sudah lama berlangsung. Sewaktu masih bekerja di MIMOS Bhd dan Jaring Communicarions Sdn. Bhd, saya akan mencuri-curi keluar ke kedai buku. Akibatnya kad kredit saya kembung! Sampai kini saya masih membayarnya perlahan-lahan. (Nasihat: Jangan gunakan kemudahan kad kredit secara berleluasa andai tidak mahu menanggung hutang seumur hidup.)

Saya berhenti seketika dari membeli buku tatkala mengalami kesuntukan wang (biasalah, putaran hidup). Kini selepas beberapa tahun menceburi bisnes katering, Allah yang Maha Kaya dan Maha Pembuka membuka pintu rezeki untuk saya sekeluarga. Bermulalah kembali kegilaan saya membeli buku.

Pada Ahad 16 Mei 2009, saya membeli 3 buah novel di jualan gudang Pay Less Books (kedai buku terpakai) di Ampang Point. Minat saya tertumpu kepada novel thriller, sains-fiksyen dan tekno-thriller. Maka 3 buah novel yang dimasukkan ke dalam karung plastik ialah Warlord! Oleh Janet Morris, Stealth War (militeri-thriller) oleh Jeff Rovin dan Enemy Territory oleh Douglas Terman. Harganya ialah RM9.00 untuk 3 buah.

Sementara itu pada 26 Mei pula, sebaik sahaja selesai mengambil cek bayaran katering di satu lokasi di SS2, Petaling Jaya, terus saya memulas stering kereta ke Amcorp Mall yang berdekatan. Saya ‘melawat’ kedai buku BookXcess yang terletak di tingkat paling atas bangunan Amcorp Mall.

Tahukah saudara apa itu kedai buku BookXcess dan buku apa yang dijualnya? Kedai buku ini menjual pelbagai kategori buku dalam bahasa Inggeris. Tarikan paling utama ialah harga buku-buku yang sangat murah, sehingga 70% dari harga asal di kedai buku lain. Bukan buku lama, tetapi masih baru (atau kelihatan baru?). Mana boleh tahan!

Hasilnya, 4 buah buku dibawa pulang; 3 buah novel thriller dan sebuah buku sejarah India. Semuanya terbitan tahun 2007, seperti berikut:

Di waktu ini saya sedang menelaah 4 buah buku sekaligus, seperti senarai ‘Sedang baca buku-buku ini’ di sebelah atas kanan blog ini. Bila mahu habis setiap buku tersebut, hanya Allah yang Maha Tahu. Tanpa niat meninggi diri dan riak (semoga Allah lindungi saya dan keluarga, amin!), saya juga amalkan membaca al-Quran dan terjemahan / tafsir. Alhamdulillah.

Baru sahaja selesai membaca novel thriller Gapura oleh Zehann Ur Rakhie, terbitan Pekan Ilmu. Akan dibikin resensi, insyaAllah. Bila? Belum tahu.

Penulis sains-fiksyen Michael Crichton meninggal

Saya salah seorang peminat karya Michael Crichton. Saya memiliki semua novel beliau, yang terakhir ialah Next. Setakat ini saya sudah membaca novel sains-fiksyen beliau seperti berikut: Timeline, The Terminal Man, State of Fear dan Andromeda Strain. Novel lain masih belum dibaca.

Best-selling author Michael Crichton, who wrote the world-famous dinosaur adventure novel Jurassic Park, has died yesterday (November 4, 2008), as reported by Sky News.

His family said the 66-year-old passed away in Los Angeles after battling cancer. Crichton was famed for his historic and prehistoric science fantasies like Jurassic Park, Timeline and The Andromeda Strain - all of which were made into hit movies. The medical doctor turned novelist wrote numerous blockbusters, some of which sold more than a 100 million copies and were translated into 30 languages worldwide.

The death of sci-fi thriller writer Michael Crichton took his millions of fans by surprise, however he left behind a healthy legacy of highly popular science-themed novels, films and TV shows, including "ER" which still airs today and for which his credits included creator, writer and executive producer. Antara novel beliau seperti berikut:
Andromeda Strain (1969): A team of scientists investigates a microbe, brought to Earth via a satellite, that wipes out an entire Arizona town by suddenly and fatally clotting human blood.

Science premise: The deaths were caused by a microbe, code named Andromeda, which has the elements required for life on Earth, but no DNA or RNA. Still it somehow transforms matter to energy and vice-versa.

Later on: The novel established Crichton as a best-selling novelist and was turned into a popular 1971 movie directed by Robert Wise. A mini-series based on the novel debuted earlier this year.

Sphere (1987): A group of scientists examines an enormous spacecraft discovered on the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.

Science premise: The spacecraft was constructed 50 years in the future and sent back through time, or maybe it’s alien, because the craft also is covered with thick coral suggesting that it has been lying there for 300 years.

Later on: Barry Levinson directed a 1998 film version of the book, starring Dustin Hoffman, Samuel L. Jackson, Liev Shreiber and Sharon Stone. Some viewers complain about the differences between the book and the movie.

Jurassic Park (1990): Dinosaurs cloned from DNA extracted from the beasts' ancient blood come to life in a theme park, where grave encounters with park officials and patrons, along with dino escapes, create edge-of-your-seat chaos.

Science premise: One of the major hurdles to cloning extinct animals is retrieving the DNA molecule, which degrades over time, intact from such ancient remains. We don't have once-extinct woolly mammoths or Tyrannosaurus rexes plodding Earth to date, though some researchers have looked into the possibility for the woolly mammoth and the Tasmanian tiger. Several modern-day animals cloned from DNA include Dolly the sheep, Cc the cloned kitten, piglets, calves and a mule.

Later on: Crichton's book hit the big screens in Steven Spielberg style, with weakling humans facing up against leviathans such as meat-eating Velicoraptor and T. rex. In one scene, T. rex outruns a car during a chase scene. (While T. rex may have eaten dust in a race against a vehicle, studies have shown the big guy could sprint a good 18 mph, or 8 meters per second.)

The Lost World (1995): The sequel to "Jurassic Park" (six years after the park debacle in the story world), this techno-thriller novel follows an expedition to an isolated Central American location where dinosaur stock were hatched and grown before being shipped off to the theme park. Characters have to fend off dinosaur attacks.

Science premise: The book touches on some extinction theories while also revealing the destructive nature of humanity. Several theories exist to explain why all non-avian dinosaurs vanished from Earth about 65 million years ago, including an asteroid impact, disease, climate change and possibly other factors.

Back story: Like the first novel, this book was adapted into a blockbuster film in 1993 by director Steven Spielberg.

Airframe (1996): The sci-fi novel follows a businessman of a fictional aerospace manufacturer as she investigates an in-flight accident, which turns out to be the result of faulty and counterfeit parts along with human error. (The pilot had let his son take the controls).

Science premise: Crichton weaves aircraft design, air safety and general human-machine themes throughout the novel.

Later on: A sub-plot of Airframe involves correcting tabloid sensationalism, which is "an odd thing for a thriller writer to sneer at, particularly Michael Crichton, whose virtues so closely tally with those of a good tabloid journalist," according to a review of the book by The New York Times.

Timeline (1999): A team of historians is funded by a techno-whiz entrepreneur, who bears a glancing resemblance to Bill Gates, to travel back in time to France in the Middle Ages to obtain information for a historical theme park.

Science premise: An unreliable 3-D fax machine allows the historians to time travel, where they immerse in the details of life in the Middle Ages, such as catapults, castles, dungeons, legendary killers and the Hundred Years War.

Later on: The book spawned the 2003 movie directed by Richard Donner, as well as a computer game.

Prey (2002): An unemployed software engineer uncovers a program run by his wife's nanorobotics company to create an army of nanorobots for use by the U.S. military in reconnaissance. The nanorobots and the hazardous materials used to make them escape and form reproductive, self-reliant swarms that kill animals and people.

Science premise: The swarm of nanorobots is created from genetically modified E. coli bacteria. They kill their prey through suffocation by blocking off their bronchial tubes, then later infecting them and slowly devouring them and taking them over.

Back story: Nanotechnology typically deals with structures 100 nanometers (one billionth of a meter) or smaller. The field could wide-ranging applications in medicine, electronics and energy production, though its environmental and health impacts are uncertain.

State of Fear (2004): An environmental lawyer uncovers a plot by eco-terrorists angry over dried-up funding sources to try to create "natural disasters" and attribute them to global warming to keep the public in a state of panic.

Science premise: Crichton supports the notion that global warming has been blown out of proportion by using the arguments that carbon dioxide isn't responsible for the Earth's recent warming trend; that some areas are actually cooling; that climate models overestimate warming; and that scientists once predicted an impending global ice age, among other arguments.

Back story: Numerous climate scientists have debunked the claims against global warming brought up in the book. For example, many studies have shown that the warming trends of the recent decades can't be replicated in models without including human greenhouse gas contributions.

Next (2006): The novel explores some of the legal and ethical issues involved with genetics. A biotech company wins the rights to a cell line from a cancer survivor, going after his daughter and grandson for their stem cells. A researcher accidentally exposes his drug addict brother to a "maturity gene" that turns him into a sober, responsible person, and causes him to age prematurely. Another researcher struggles with the half-human, half-ape he created in an embryo.

Science premise: Scientists can use cells taken from individuals to study diseases, as well as to grow tissues and. Techniques can also isolate specific genes and genomes.

Back story: Next is Crichton's last published work to-date. The risk of creating transgenic animals and using embryonic stem cells are currently hot-button scientific issues. (Live Science)

English novels from Alaf21

Alaf 21 Sdn Bhd, a Malay publisher, is moving forward by publishing English fictions. The company has new line up for English novels, namely Jasmines on the 4^th Floor, Far Away and After the Rain. Prior to this, they already published Norzailina Nordin’s novel, Zuriat, to English version titled Genetics Peril.

For the info, several years ago, Alaf 21 has taken a bold and brave move to publish English fiction books for children. At that time the publisher has three titles in the market; House on Bukit Kenanga, House Of Horror and Mystery Of The Old Mansion all by Zamir Zakwan.

The latest is Personal Justice, an English version of A.D.A.M by the famous local thriller author, Ramlee Awang Murshid.

I personally congratulate both the publisher and author for a very good and rare initiative from local Malay publishing industry. I can’t wait to read all the books, albeit my buzy schedule with catering.

Interrupt – blur!

This novel is not what I expected. I bought this book at Payless Books, Ampang Point, Ampang because of its story – about IT and hi-tech environment – and the price only RM7. I like technology thriller, but this novel bored me! Yet I finish reading it.

The synopsis at the back cover promising, unfortunately most of the content and plots are not what you can get as other good techno-thriller. Not recommended to advanced readers, but for beginners, yes.

Synopsis

In Silicon Valley, profoundly deaf 12-year-old Wayne Faulkner tries to call 911 when an intruder stuns his father in the back yard - and 40,000 phones suddenly go dead. Wayne's father, Andy, can't figure out what happened, and he ought to see it at once: he's a telecom engineer, after all.

But the terrorist Interrupt is clever, and Interrupt doesn't mind murder... Andy, soon a prime suspect, must identify Interrupt before the next killing - for Interrupt has taken Wayne. But Interrupt may be anybody, even the beautiful line worker, Nell Colson. Anybody at all.

The terrorist's code name is Interrupt and he is intent on taking down the phone lines. He will not let anything stand in his way, especially the telecom engineer father of a deaf son who depends on the phone lines for everything. It will take all that the father knows to save his son and stop the ruthless modern day terrorist.

Mamasan – lives behind the scenes of nightclub

Following the success of his first novel, Taikor, which was nominated for the 2006 International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award, a storyteller Khoo Kheng-Hor has launched this second novel, Mamasan, which plunges the readers into the glitzy world of nightclubbing.

With simple plot to understand, Khoo’s Mamasan takes you behind the scenes of a large Kuala Lumpur cabaret and nightclub’s life. The main message from this novel is that peoples always wearing different masks for different occasions.

The lives of dance hostesses, managers, bouncers, mamasans and customers are narrated in quite interesting, sometimes quite confusing.

Khoo spins a tale encompassing other tales covering juvenile delinquency, growing up, deceit versus honesty, love, broken homes, corruption and power abuse of police officers, rape, blackmail and murder.

As a matter of fact, Malaysia’s English literature is not very well known in international market, yet Khoo’s effort to be quite satisfactory.

To be honest, his first novel Taikor is better than Mamasan, yet I hope that Khoo Kheng-Hor will continue his urge to tell stories.

I would like to see Khoo’s novel translates in bahasa Melayu, any takers?

Hikayat Muhammad Ali Hanafiyyah sebuah hikayat perang

Setelah selesai membaca Hikayat Muhammad Ali Hanafiyyah, maka benarlah kata orang, hikayat ini adalah hikayat perang. Hampir keseluruhan isi dan dialog hikayat ini berkisahkan perang menentang golongan Muawiyah yang dipimpin oleh Yazid bin Muawiyah dan Marwan Hakim.

Seperti kata penerbit, sebahagian cerita dalam hikayat ini, terutamanya peristiwa-peristiwa yang berlaku pada zaman Rasulullah S.A.W dan para sahabat adalah dongeng dan khayalan penulisnya sahaja. Walaupun ada watak dan personaliti yang benar-benar wujud dalam sejarah, namun kejadian dan banyak watak-watak lain merupakan fiksyen semata-mata. Justeru itu, pembaca dinasihatkan supaya merujuk buku-buku sejarah dan sirah Rasulullah S.A.W bagi mengetahui kisah sebenar.

Apabila saya rujuk buku sejarah, watak utama hikayat ini, Muhammad Ali Hanafiyyah, memang benar-benar wujud. Muhammad Ali Hanafiyyah merupakan anak kepada sepupu Rasulullah S.A.W, Ali bin Abu Talib.

Menurut buku sejarah, selepas Hasan dan Husain meninggal dunia, sekelompok keluarga Rasulullah S.A.W melantik Muhammad Ali Hanafiyyah sebagai pemimpin atau khalifah. Mereka yang setia secara aktif terhadap perjuangan keturunan Ali r.a ini dinamakan golongan Syiah, yang ingin membela kematian Husain di Karbala. Sentimen ini diteruskan dengan cubaan untuk menabalkan anak Ali r.a yang lain, iaitu Muhammad Ali Hanafiyyah sebagai khalifah. Pemberontakan Syiah ini diketuai oleh Mukhtar bin Abi ‘Ubaid. Inilah antara rentetan peristiwa yang dikategorikan sebagai ‘fitnah yang kedua’ selepas wafatnya Nabi Muhammad S.A.W.

Ya, fiksyen tetap fiksyen. Namun pada hemat saya, penulis Hikayat Muhammad Ali Hanafiyyah ini cuba mengangkat keturunan Ali r.a yang merupakan susur galur keluarga Rasulullah S.A.W ke suatu tahap yang penulis itu sendiri tahu ke tahap mana.

Sebagai sebuah fiksyen perang, ia menarik untuk diteliti dan direnungi. Watak utama Muhammad Ali Hanafiyyah dan rakan-rakannnya digambarkan mempunyai kekuatan yang amat luar biasa. Mengapa? Bayangkan: mereka boleh mengangkat seorang hulubalang musuh yang gagah perkasa dengan satu tangan dan kemudian menghempas ke tanah, maka hancurlah tulang temulang; mereka memotong putus keempat-empat kaki gajah dengan sekali libasan pedang; memancung kepala berpuluh-puluh askar musuh dalam beberapa saat sahaja; menggempur keseorangan ke dalam askar musuh yang berjumlah puluhan ribu dengan amat berani, umpama aksi kamikaze, namun tetap berjaya; memukul kepala panglima utama musuh dengan cokmar sampai hancur badan menyembah bumi atau sekurang-kurangnya keluar otak dari hidung, telinga dan mulut; dan seterusnya.

Bagi peminat cerita perang, Hikayat Muhammad Ali Hanafiyyah memang sesuai untuk anda. Plot-plot yang pendek dan mendebarkan!

Novel yang baik menerapkan unsur budaya

Bagi saya, antara ciri sebuah novel yang baik ialah pembacanya membaca dengan asyik dan tidak melangkau, walaupun mungkin tidak berniat untuk dihabiskan dalam masa beberapa jam sahaja. Ciri novel yang baik juga boleh mengajak pembaca menghayati fenomena dan panorama yang diwujudkan dalam plot-plotnya. Tidak kurang juga sebuah novel yang baik boleh membuatkan pembacanya mengenali sedikit sebanyak budaya sesebuah kehidupan, sama ada murni atau sebaliknya.

Saya baru selesai membaca novel Hatiku di Harajuku oleh Ramlee Awang Murshid. Saya membelinya lebih kurang setahun yang lalu, tetapi baru membacanya.

Saya senang dengan novel ini; plot-plot yang pendek dan mendebarkan, banyak aksi, banyak teladan dan saya boleh mengenali budaya samseng Jepun melalui watak-watak dan kejadian yang berlaku di persekitaran kegiatan kumpulan Yakuza, juga budaya samurai.

Sebelum saya membaca novel ini, bertahun dahulu saya telah membaca sebuah novel bahasa Inggeris bertajuk “Cloud of Sparrows”. Mengapa saya menyukai Cloud of Sparrows? Pertamanya kerana penulisnya orang Jepun, Takashi Matsuoka, keduanya kerana ceritanya berkisar di Jepun.

Novel Cloud of Sparrows penuh dengan budaya dan perkelahian cara samurai, berperang menggunakan kuda dan pedang, tipu helah ninja, pandangan orang Jepun terhadap orang Inggeris, dan pertentangan budaya antara dua peradaban; Jepun dan Inggeris atau barat. Novel ini mempunyai sekuel, bertajuk “Autumn Bridge” yang masih cantik melepak dalam rak buku saya!

Sebagai panduan asas, saya memang mencari novel-novel bahasa Inggeris yang ditulis penulis tempatan dan Asia. Juga novel yang menumpukan jalan cerita dan budaya orang-orang Asia. Lantaran itu dalam koleksi saya ada novel-novel yang ditulis oleh Takashi Matsuoka, Douglas Chua, Khoo Kheng-Hor,Tunku Halim dan James Clavell.

Okey, berbalik kepada Hatiku di Harajuku. Novel ini membuatkan saya menyelongkar rak buku saya, dan menjumpai sebuah buku bertajuk Konspirasi Jepun yang dikarang oleh Marvin J. Wolf. Sudah lebih kurang 13 tahun buku ini terperap di rak buku, namun tidak tergerak untuk membacanya. Buku Konspirasi Jepun versi Bahasa Melayu ini diterbitkan oleh Yayasan Penataran Ilmu, tahun 1989, dan diterjemahkan dari versi asal bahasa Inggeris oleh Mansor Ahmad Saman. Saya sedang membacanya selepas novel Hatiku di Harajuku.

'Sangeetha', garapan dua budaya bangsa Azizi
